Formula Development

aboutSince 2001, Cano Coatings has been an industry leader manufacturing high-end acrylic coatings for the building industry. In 2009, Cano used their in-house expertise to formulate a protective coating that could be used to reduce the spread of flame spread and the threat of mildew and weather damage resulting from moisture exposure.

When developing this formula, the company also wanted to find a way to differentiate the paint colour from the competition while also supporting a worthy charitable cause. Cano Coatings recognized an opportunity to support the Canadian Breast Research Foundation (Prairies/NWT) with a pink colour tint and donation of $3.00 per retail gallon sold. The colour pink helped establish a visual uniqueness for PinkShield but more importantly it demonstrated the company’s commitment to raise funds for breast cancer research, education and awareness.

The protective paint formula was developed just in time to meet a growing demand for fire protection by the Alberta home building industry. By 2010 the Canadian National Fire Code had stated in section 5.6.1.2 "Protection of Adjacent Building” that all new building construction must use approved fire resistant sheathing on sidewall construction. This sheathing must have been tested to CAN/ULC S102 and have a flame spread rating of not more than 25 when tested on OSB or plywood in addition to functioning as a thermal barrier of not less than 15 minutes when tested to CAN/ULC S101 (Small Scale).

Certification

PinkShield received its certification through Intertek/WH. Since 2010, Cano Coatings has been supplying pre-coated fire-rated OSB sheathing (PKboard) to many builders throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan. PinkShield is also utilized by Pinkwood Ltd, Western Canada’s premiere I-Joist manufacturer and applied in-line to create the world’s first factory coated, protected I-joist. Every year, PinkShield is being used to pre-coat millions of linear feet of I-joists, fire-rated OSB and lumber for the building industry.

Pinkshield is manufactured in Calgary, Alberta and is used to produce millions of linear square feet of products for the building industry.

Mike Holmes Endorsement

After achieving rapid market acceptance with our factory applied PinkShield wood products, demand began to grow for a retail version of PinkShield. The first step towards distribution started when PinkShield received an endorsement from Mike Holmes, Canada’s most trusted contractor. He agreed to stand behind PinkShield and PinkShield related pre-coated building products due to the fact it "delivers benefits that meet environmental and safety standards.” Today, PinkShield is often showcased on HGTV’s "Holmes Makes it Right” as his preferred fire protective paint. PinkShield has also been profiled on HGTV’s Income Property.

Purchase

Today, PinkShield can be purchased from independent of paint stores sold across Canada in 1 gallon or 5 gallon pails, contact your local retailer. Fire-rated PKboard, PKlumber and PKjoists are also available and various lumber yards and retail outlets throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan.
